Trade: Changing Terms and Conditions

China’s persistent but moderating goods trade surplus has ignited political fireworks, even as some of its partners have seen improved terms of trade from rebounding commodities prices in 2016. Despite rising nominal import levels and volatile commodity import prices, China’s significant surplus in non commodity goods has been resilient, meaning the threat of protectionism abroad will remain a concern for China in the coming years.
