Tapping the Brakes on Auto Production

Weaker auto sales in China have boosted vehicle inventory levels at dealerships and weighed down gasoline demand. In response, passenger car production in 2017 is shrinking, contributing to lower overall industrial output growth. Household consumption—including for autos—will be critical to sustaining economic growth in the months ahead as credit conditions are under pressure.
