China’s Auto Sector Shifts Into Neutral

Even before Xi Jinping’s recent pledges to open China’s auto market to more foreign ownership and competition, the sector has been a critical bellweather for household consumption, as well as a vitally important source of demand for several upstream industries. Maturing demand and the recent weakness in the property market have caused auto sales to weaken cyclically early in 2018, with negative consequences for China’s overall industrial output growth this year.
