China at COP26

The 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties will be held from October 31 to November 12th in Glasgow. This will be the first conference since signatories updated their climate pledges, and attention will turn to countries with less ambitious targets to up their game—not least China, the world’s largest carbon emitter. China’s current commitments fall short of what is needed to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement, and a new policy document it announced one week before the conference has so far offered little more. Though some international negotiators may seek a softer approach, the pressure will be on for China to take more action,
