Property Market Chartbook, January 2022

Recent property market data point to continued declines in overall sales, particularly in pre-construction sales, along with slowing new land purchases by developers. Ultimately, any stabilization in the broader economy will depend upon some sequential improvement in property sales in the first half of the year. Policy support for the sector is emerging, with reported easing of localities’ escrow requirements for developers and state-owned firms leading asset purchases. However, many private developers are facing more acute short-term financing pressures, and defaults are likely to continue.
